IB EYP at HUS: How Our Approach Works
Our IB EYP programme is built for the way young children learn between ages 2.6 and 5.6. Children are not ready for formal subject lessons at this stage. They are ready for play, story, movement, observation, and conversation. The EYP framework turns these everyday ways of learning into a structured approach that prepares each child for primary school without losing the joy of these early years.
What sets the EYP at HUS apart is the focus on agency. Children get real choices through the day , which station to visit, which book to read, which question to ask. The teacher's role is to notice what each child is drawn to and build the next experience around that interest. Rooms are designed for movement, with light furniture children can rearrange and materials on open shelves at child height.
IB EYP Subjects at HUS Chennai: What Children Explore
The IB EYP subjects framework groups learning into developmental areas that overlap through the day. Here are the IB EYP subjects covered at our Chennai campus.
Language and Communication
Listening, speaking, early reading, mark-making, and storytelling. Children develop English vocabulary plus structured exposure to a second language.
Mathematical Thinking
Sorting, matching, counting, basic shape, pattern, and early measurement through physical materials. Activities feel like games but build clear pre-numeracy foundations.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Self-awareness, friendship skills, managing feelings, and independence. This area quietly shapes everything else for the child.
Physical Development
Fine motor work, gross motor activity, and body awareness. Active outdoor time is a daily commitment.
Understanding the World
Children explore the natural environment, basic technology, family and community through age-appropriate inquiry.
Expressive Arts and Design
Visual arts, music, dramatic play, and design through everyday materials. Teachers rotate materials weekly.
IB EYP in Chennai: How HUS Compares
Families considering IB EYP in Chennai usually weigh three things during admissions visits. Cohort size and teacher-to-child ratio matter most at this stage. Our groups are capped at 20 children, with one homeroom teacher and one assistant per group.
Outdoor space and natural materials are the second factor. The HUS campus on OMR has dedicated outdoor learning areas, plus easy access to the wider campus grounds for nature walks.
Continuity into primary years is the third factor. Families who pick the EYP pathway with the intent to stay in IB through to Grade 12 like that HUS offers the full pathway. After the EYP year, students move into our IB Primary Years Programme without a break in teaching style.
Common Questions About IB EYP at HUS
The most common question is about academic readiness for Class 1. Children who complete our IB EYP year typically enter Class 1 with strong oral language, confident pre-reading skills, and a positive attitude to school. The foundations for reading and numeracy are built through play, not worksheets.
The second is about settling in. Most children take two to four weeks to fully settle. The first week is shorter, and parents stay close if their child needs that comfort. We do not rush the process. Families wanting more details on IB EYP in Chennai can write to admissions@huschennai.in.
Outdoor Learning and Play-Based Inquiry at HUS
Outdoor learning sits at the heart of our early years approach. Children spend a meaningful chunk of every day outside the classroom, in the garden, in play areas, on nature walks, or working with water, sand, and natural materials. The HUS campus near Muttukadu Lake makes this practical because we have the space and the natural setting most urban schools lack.
Play-based inquiry is the other thread. Most learning happens through structured play that the teacher plans around the current inquiry theme. A unit on 'How we organise ourselves' might involve setting up a pretend shop, taking turns as customer and shopkeeper, sorting objects, and counting out small amounts. The play looks free; the learning behind it is deliberate.
Moving from EYP to PYP at HUS
Children who complete the EYP year at HUS step into PYP Class 1 with a real head start. They already know how to ask their own questions, work in small groups, and share what they have figured out. The Class 1 teacher knows what each child has experienced because the records pass through together.
Transition support starts six weeks before the year ends. Children visit the PYP corridor, meet the Class 1 teacher, and spend short sessions in the future classroom. To begin the application for the next IB EYP cycle, follow the HUS admission process.
