Why Parents are Choosing IB Schools for their Children

In today’s dynamic world, success depends on real-world skills that help children adapt, think critically, and lead with confidence. This is why many parents are choosing the IB board for its focus on developing lifelong competencies like analytical thinking, intercultural awareness, communication, and collaboration.

What others Have asked us…

The IB is a non-profit international educational organization established in 1968. It offers 3 programmes of international education that span the primary, middle and secondary school years: International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) - designed for students aged through 3 to 11, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) - for students aged through 11 to 16 and IB Diploma Programme (DP) - for students aged through 16 to 18. While these programmes follow a logical sequence, each may be offered independently. In all 3 programmes, the IB offers schools with school authorization, curriculum material, assessment procedures, faculty-training workshops, programme evaluation and comprehensive support services in English, French and Spanish.

We have students who come from different curriculums, both national and international. Therefore assessments are largely skill-based and test for ability levels expected in the grade that the student is applying for. No special preparation, beyond a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast, is required or suggested for the admissions assessments.

  • IB-Aligned Language Program: Structured language acquisition from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
  • Second Language Options: Spanish, French, and Hindi.
  • Third Language Option: Tamil.
  • Grades 1-3: 14-week rotational program (French, Spanish, Hindi) to help students choose their second language.
  • From Grade 4: Students select a second language with flexibility to change.
  • IB Diploma Programme (DP): Languages offered at Standard Level (SL), Higher Level (HL), and Ab Initio (for beginners).
  • Goal: Develop linguistic skills, global awareness, and intercultural understanding as per IB philosophy.

Students must be enrolled in an IB authorized school to participate in an IB programme. Although entry to the IB Diploma is open to all students entering grade 11, the advice is given by the coordinator and teachers as to which course and subject combination is most suitable for each student.

HUS teachers receive continuous training to deliver the evolving IB curriculum.

IB Admission at HUS Chennai: A Quick Guide for First-Time Parents

Most parents we speak to about IB admission at HUS are doing this for the first time. So here is the short version. Our application has four stages, and the flow is the same whether your child is joining the IB Early Years Programme, IB Primary Years Programme, IB Middle Years Programme, or IB Diploma Programme. What changes from one programme to the next is what happens at the interaction stage.

The rest of this page covers eligibility for IB across the four programmes, the IB requirements you will want to keep ready, and how to apply for IB online for the 2026-27 academic year. Families new to IB admission usually want a clear picture of what each step looks like, and the sections below break this down.

Across the IB admission cycle at HUS chennai, we see three patterns hold true. Families who apply for IB early get more choice on subject availability. Families who keep their IB requirements checklist ready avoid the most common delays. And families who treat the IB apply online step as the start (not the finish) of the conversation find the rest of the IB admission process simpler. Our IB apply online portal stays open throughout the year, but seats fill in stages.

Eligibility for IB at HUS: Criteria for Each Programme

Eligibility for IB at HUS is not one fixed checklist. Each programme has its own age window and a different read on prior schooling. Our team checks every application against the eligibility for IB points below before booking your interaction visit. The eligibility for IB criteria differs between EYP, PYP, MYP, and DP, so the rules below are worth reading even if you have applied to an IB school in Chennai before.

Early Years Programme (EYP)

Children aged 2.6 to 5.6 years can join the IB Early Years Programme. Since most children in this age group have not yet started formal schooling, a school report is not needed. The assessment is play-based, and our homeroom teacher sits with the child the whole time, so it feels more like a play session than a test. Eligibility for IB EYP is the most flexible across our programmes.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

For the IB Primary Years Programme, the age range is 6 to 10 years, which maps to Classes 1 through 5. If your child is moving up from our own EYP, there is no separate written test for PYP entry. Children coming in from another school sit a short interaction with the homeroom teacher.

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

MYP at HUS runs from Grade 6 to Grade 10, so ages 11 to 15. If your child is joining mid-MYP, there is a skill-based written check plus a personal interaction. The eligibility for IB MYP does not require any IB background. A lot of our current MYP cohort came in from CBSE and ICSE schools. More on what they study can be found on the IB Middle Years Programme page.

Diploma Programme (DP)

For the IB Diploma Programme, your child should have completed Grade 10 from a recognised board. That covers CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IB MYP, or any equivalent international curriculum. Students aged 16 or 17 enroll into Grade 11 and finish the diploma over two years.

How to Apply for IB at HUS Online: The Four-Step Process

The IB apply online process has four stages. The first one you can finish from your phone in five minutes. After that, things move into conversation with our admissions team. The IB apply online flow is the same across all four programmes. To apply for IB at HUS, families typically take seven to ten working days from initial enquiry to admission decision, depending on visit scheduling.

Step 1: Apply Online

Fill out the enquiry form on this page. It is short. You will pick the programme your child is applying for, drop in a few basic details, and you are done. This is the IB apply online step that opens the file. For families ready to apply for IB right now, this five-minute step is all that is needed.

Step 2: Submit Documents

Send across the documents listed below, either through the IB apply online portal or by email. We come back to confirm receipt within two working days, usually sooner.

Step 3: Interaction and Visit

Come to campus, meet our academic team, walk the grounds. For PYP, MYP, and DP, there is a skill-based assessment as part of this visit. For EYP, it is an unstructured play session.

Step 4: Enrollment

Confirm your seat and finish the onboarding paperwork. If you would rather start with a campus walk before applying, write to admissions@huschennai.in or drop by our HUS campus in Chennai.

IB Requirements: Documents You Need to Apply for IB

The IB requirements for documents look about the same across PYP, MYP, and DP. International students add one or two extras. Run through the IB requirements list below before you start your application so it goes through in a single round.

Different programmes have slightly different IB requirements for documents. The common IB requirements cover what every applicant needs to submit, with programme-specific IB requirements layered on top. This keeps the IB requirements list short and focused, especially for first-time applicants.

Common IB requirements (all programmes)

· Birth certificate, original plus a copy

· Two recent passport-size photographs

· Address proof (any standard one works)

· Aadhaar card copies for both parents

· Transfer certificate from the previous school, needed from PYP onwards

Programme-specific IB requirements

· PYP and MYP: A recent school report card or progress sheet

· DP: Grade 9 and Grade 10 mark sheets, plus predicted Grade 10 scores if you are applying mid-year

· International applicants: Passport copy, OCI or PIO card if applicable, and a translated transfer certificate if the original is not in English

Anything that does not quite meet the IB requirements (illegible scans, expired certificates) gets flagged within two working days. The admissions team will tell you exactly what to resubmit so the process does not get held up. We keep the IB requirements list updated each cycle, so write to admissions@huschennai.in if you need the latest version.

When Does the 2026-27 IB Admission Cycle Open?

Our 2026-27 IB admission cycle is open right now, across all four programmes. We do take mid-year applications too, but for MYP and DP we look at subject continuity carefully before confirming a seat.

Applying early matters more than parents usually realise. At IBDP level, HL subject seats in Group 4 sciences and Group 5 mathematics fill up first. For EYP and PYP, an early application gets you preference on which section your child goes into and which homeroom teacher they get.

If you want a longer walkthrough of what to expect during the IB apply online stage and beyond, our blog has a guide to IB school admissions for parents and students that goes into more detail.

What Happens After You Send the Enquiry Form

After you send the IB admission enquiry, expect to hear back within three working days to set up the interaction. The actual IB admission decision usually comes back seven to ten working days after the campus visit and assessment.

If a student does not quite fit the IB requirements for the grade you applied for, our academic team usually has a Plan B. Sometimes that is a different grade. Sometimes a different IB programme altogether. The idea is to keep the door open for families committed to the IB pathway, even if the starting point shifts a little.

Things to Know Before You Apply for IB at HUS Chennai

A few practical points that come up often during admission conversations. We keep the IB admission window open until each programme is full. The suggestion is to apply for IB at least three months before the academic year starts, especially for IBDP where HL subject availability matters.

The eligibility for IB at HUS does not require any prior IB background. Plenty of our students came from CBSE, ICSE, or IGCSE schools and bridged into IB through the orientation we run in the first term. The IB requirements around application fees get reviewed every year, so write to admissions@huschennai.in for the current fee structure.

Sibling applications are reviewed together when families ask us to. Each child still does their own programme-specific assessment, since the IB admission decision has to reflect how each child is doing on their own. International families can complete the IB apply online step from any location. Documents and the first interaction can be done virtually. The campus visit usually happens on-site closer to when your child actually joins. Start with the contact form.

Quick summary for Chennai parents: The IB admission window at HUS is open for 2026-27. The eligibility for IB at HUS depends on the programme, and the IB requirements list is short for first-time applicants. To apply for IB, follow the four steps on this page or write to admissions@huschennai.in. The IB apply online step takes five minutes, and our admissions team handles the rest of the IB admission journey from there. For an IB admission visit, you can also use the IB apply online portal to schedule a campus walk first. Whether you want to apply for IB now or just explore the eligibility for IB programmes, the team is happy to walk you through your options.
